A Framework for Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Big Data into Health Education Curricula in Nigerian Universities

Abstract Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data are transforming health education by enhancing personalized learning, assessment, research, and clinical training. This study examined the role of AI and Big Data in shaping the future of health education in Nigerian universities, focusing on their applications, benefits, challenges, and prospects for integration. A narrative review methodology was adopted using articles retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, covering the period between 2019 and 2024. Of 275 identified articles, 35 met the inclusion criteria and were reviewed following the PRISMA selection process. The findings revealed that AI and Big Data can improve teaching and learning through adaptive learning systems, access to large healthcare datasets, enhanced clinical competency development, and support for evidence-based research. However, their adoption is constrained by inadequate technological infrastructure, limited funding, low digital literacy, shortage of skilled personnel, and concerns about data privacy and security. The study concluded that successful integration of AI and Big Data requires investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building, curriculum reform, and appropriate ethical frameworks, and suggests that collaboration among key stakeholders is essential in preparing future healthcare professionals for a rapidly evolving digital healthcare environment
